Brian Meronek K.C. is Senior Counsel at Trippier Law with more than five decades of litigation experience. Brian spent from 1974-1981 as a litigation lawyer with the Federal Department of Justice.  Since entering private practice in 1982, he has built a distinguished career representing clients in complex commercial, environmental, administrative, pension, product liability, personal injury and medical malpractice cases across Canada. He has appeared before courts at every level in the Federal Court of Canada, in Manitoba and in Alberta.  He has also appeared before the Superior Courts in British Columbia, Ontario and Saskatchewan.  He has also appeared in the Supreme Court of Canada on several occasions.  He was recognized as Queen’s Counsel in 1995.

Over the course of his career, Brian has been involved in some of Manitoba’s most significant inquiries, regulatory proceedings, and class actions, acting for and against governments, corporations, public institutions, and private clients. His practice is varied and also includes construction litigation and defamation cases. Brian’s latter practice involves acting for First Nations and its members in significant environmental class actions.

Beyond his legal work, Brian is actively involved in the community and currently serves on the Board of Operation Walk Manitoba.

Significant Hearings:

  • Has acted for Consumers Association of Canada in over 100 proceedings involving oil and gas, electricity and pipeline regulatory proceedings in Manitoba and Alberta;
  • Acted for the City of Calgary in a three-month hearing before the Alberta Energy & Utilities Board in the $130 million sale of retail assets of ATCO Gas to Direct Energy and subsequent leave to appeal to the Alberta Court of appeal.
  • Acted on behalf of the Consumers Association of Canada, in a lengthy hearing dealing with approval of a $260 million sale of Centra Gas Manitoba Inc. by Westcoast Transmission to Manitoba Hydro;
  • Acted for farmers and ranchers in the Manitoba CEC Hearing into the BiPole III construction by Manitoba Hydro;

Significant Cases:

  • Successfully acted for employees/retirees in the SCC against MTS in a pension case resulting in a $140M award.

  • Successfully acted for flooding victims against Manitoba for the 2011 Lake Manitoba flood resulting in a $85M settlement.

Pisclevich et al v. The Government of Manitoba, 2021 MBQB 141

  • Successfully acted for aboriginal children in care for Children Special Allowances taken illegally by Manitoba resulting in a $445M settlement.

Flette et al. v. The Government of Manitoba, 2024 MBKB 146

  • Successfully represented Peguis First Nation in the Federal Court in a judicial review against Manitoba Hydro relating to the approval of the Manitoba-Minnesota transmission line.

  • Successfully represented the principal City planner for the City of Winnipeg in a misfeasance in public office action.
