Our Historic Building

An elegant Renaissance Revival composition, The Canada Permanent Building, designed by J.D. Atchison to convey an image of strength and security, is gracefully enriched, outside and in, by exquisite materials and ornamentation. The building is designated as a historic building.

The three-storey commercial building in downtown Winnipeg was erected in 1909 and was significant as the home of an early financial institution that was instrumental in capitalizing development on the Prairies, propelling the city into a regional financial centre through its mortgage lending, savings and investment services.

The building’s elegant exterior style includes facades of red sandstone, not commonly found in the city, curved entrance and upper-storey windows, and tall rectangular windows throughout, recessed into the thick brick walls.

The main corner entrance of the building opens to a vestibule that was designed with a Roman coffered ceiling and to the well-lit double-height banking hall with large windows, white marble veneer columns and pilasters rising to a richly moulded, coffered ceiling, verd-antique marble wainscotting and an original mosaic floor.

A secondary entrance leads to a grand 3 story marble staircase with cast iron balustrade, and an original caged elevator to the upper level offices.  Here you will find the original offices partitioned by wood panels with blue-chip glass and the manager's office featuring a green tile fireplace with a heavy, bracketed mantelpiece.
